BOCC Legacy Scholarship
Ommu-Kulsoom Abdul-Rahman is entering her first year in law studies at McGill University. This follows her completion of a BA in Political Science and Islamic Studies with a superior academic record recognized by her placement on the Dean’s List. Ommu-Kulsoom is president of MY Voice Matters where she mentors black youth via a program called Readers are Leaders. This program aims to promote that higher education is just as valuable for black youth as the other talents for which they are well known. In addition, she is co-director of the Youth Council of the Federation of Black Canadians. Ommu-Kulsoom aspires to use her law degree to address Human Rights via institutional reform. Aubrey & Marla Dan Foundation Scholarship
Asha will enter her 2nd year at Carleton University where she is studying for a BA towards a career as a child life worker. While completing her first year with a B+ average, Asha was active in On Your Mark Jr. Basketball league where she was Director and Curator of the league’s Social Media Department. Her additional volunteer roles range from leading community basketball games at Holland Bloorview Kids, church mission trips, Food bank volunteering and as a member of Ontario Pathfinders Advisory Council. Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
Jaryd Christie is entering the 2nd year of graduate studies in Medical Biophysics at Western University. As a graduate student, he is more heavily involved in research which is consonant with his overall goal of contributing to expanded cancer here and in Barbados. Jaryd has just co-published his research aimed at developing and translating clinical tools that improve the diagnosis and prognosis of lung cancer. He will also be mentoring students re their career paths as well as undertaking Teaching Assistant roles in the upcoming year. Gloria Baylis Memorial Scholarship
Studying for a Masters Degree in Speech Language Pathology at University of Toronto, Myles Drayton is entering the second year of a stellar academic record where he has been on the Dean’s List. Myles has been active in many aspects of his church ministry exercising leadership and mentorship, in bible fellowships, vacation camps and study trips. Myles is proud of his mentorship of students for career and character that has been a primary focus of his community service. His MSc will prepare him for his career goal of working with clients who have difficulty swallowing as he recognizes that restoring that ability will lead to their renewed enjoyment of food and the social interaction of a meal The Gloria Baylis Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by Baylis Medical Inc. |
Harold M. Brathwaite Memorial Scholarship
A 2nd-year student in the Juris Doctor program at the University of Ottawa, Shade successfully completed her first-year studies with B+ average while volunteering in several activities. She participated in research with the Human Rights Clinic and , promoted the pursuit of legal studies among African Canadian youth as a volunteer with the Black Law Students Association. She is the director of Public Relations and Fundraising with a charitable Foundation in Ottawa as well as a continuing member of the Common Law Students Association- Joint Equity and Advocacy Committee. Shade remains focused on pursuing a career as a human rights lawyer and ultimately as a judge. Shade holds a BA in Criminology from University of Toronto. The Harold M. Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
Syenne Holder is entering her fourth year at Carleton University studying Architectural Design. Having made the Dean's list based on outstanding academics in her first two years, Syenne continued to excel academically earning A+ and Bs in her third-year coursework She is also in the co-op stage of her studies over the summer. Syenne maintains an active role on committees at Carleton in addition to being a pannist with the Oshawa sounds of Steel and Panatics Steelband Network and the Caribbean cultural club of Oshawa. Syenne notes that the pandemic has deeply affected the work of these two organizations but she continues to run their website and promotions with a view to ensuring continuation of their roles in the community. John Rollock Memorial Scholarship
A Business Management student at Ryerson University, Hailey McCalla is entering her 3rd year having excelled in her studies earning a B+ average in her 2nd year. At the same time, her work in the community extended into her continued participation in Black Boys Code. an organization aimed at coaching 8-17-year-old black males in computer science. This is pursuant to her passion to create `diversity in the technology ecosystem’. In addition, Hailey is active in Developing Young Leaders of Tomorrow, Today (DYLOTT). Her work with this organization has been in counseling and research where one of their current goal is to develop race-based data on COVID-19 among other goals. Hailey continues to pursue her goal of being a Digital Risk Manager in Business. The John Rollock Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by Barbados Canada Foundation. |
Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
Entering Year 1 at University of Guelph, Elijah’s will start his full time studies virtually due to COVID-19. Apart from his academic achievements particularly in Math, Elijah undertook volunteering at long term care homes in Barbados where he assisted the elderly in whatever way he could in their daily activities. This was a personal project of his own initiative while in high school. In addition, he earned the Duke of Edinburgh award as a Boy Scout through his participation in community cleanups, food distribution, national celebrations among other things. Donald MacKinlay Memorial Scholarship
Alyssa is attending University of Toronto in her 2nd year. She successfully completed her first year in pursuit of a BA with a major in Economics and a minor in Political Science. At the same time, she continued her active involvement in the Caribbean Students Union where she led one of their initiatives to provide books to prison libraries She is also leading other female students in delivering community services as volunteers focused on Long term care centers with initiatives that support an improved quality of life for the residents. Alyssa plans to pursue a career in Economics. The Donald MacKinlay Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by Barbados Canada Association. |
Gloria Baylis Memorial Scholarship
Keneca Pingue-Giles is in her 3rd year at Osgoode Law School. She has a long history of volunteering with community based social justice initiatives, which she maintained in her 2nd year at Osgoode. She volunteered with Peacebuilders, advocating via the Restorative Justice program for youth 12-18 years old facing conflict with the law. Through this program, youth are encouraged and counseled in making amends and developing a positive future. When successful, charges ore often withdrawn leading to a second chance for these youth. Keneca also continues her work with the Black Law Students Association. Her leadership capacity led to her appointment as Senior Editor of the Osgoode Hall Law Journal which in turn led to her swift promotion to Executive Editor, the first black law student in this role.
