Jordan Lee Alleyne
​Donald MacKinlay Memorial Scholarship
Jordan Lee Alleyne is entering Southern Alberta Institute of Technology to earn her diploma in Film and Video production. Jordan Lee plans to build on the skills that won her prizes in literary competitions through the Optimist International competition in Barbados and for poster presentations for UNICEF on bullying. Her community participation includes applying her talent working as a production assistant in film with Praise Academy of Dance in Barbados and participating in Christian ministry with Youth With a Mission.

Jaeda Berbeck
Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
​
Jaeda Berbeck is entering First year at University of Waterloo to pursue studies in Environmental Planning. Jaeda has been an outgoing and active volunteer and community contributor for several years in her church and through other interests.  She is a member of her church choir, has contributed and participated in international mission visits, was the media coordinator for On Your Mark basketball and as a member of Apple Creek Pathfinders group has manned the booth at Markham Fair offering health promotion to fairgoers. Jaeda chose this field for her ultimate goal of designing and building functional living spaces and shelters for families especially aspiring homeowners.

Rashida Carter
Gloria Baylis Memorial Scholarship
Rashida Carter is earning her Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University in New Brunswick. She will be entering her second year of the program and aspires to be a registered psychotherapist. Rashida is currently volunteering as a tele-mental health counsellor through Family Counselling and Support in Guelph. She is strongly connected to her church community as she volunteers in the youth ministry coordinating outreach programs for young adults. In addition, she travelled internationally on mission trips where the goal is to support community outreach and network building through community partnerships.

Jaryd Christie
Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
​
Jaryd Christie is entering doctoral studies in Medical Biophysics at Western University under the sponsorship of Diproinduca Canada. In 2021 Jaryd earned his Master’s in Biophysics at Western in a program where he transitions into his PhD for doctoral studies in medical biophysics. Jaryd undertook research into developing computer programs that analyze medical images for diagnosis and artificial intelligence tools for predicting patient outcomes in lung cancer. He has presented his work at several high profile scientific academic forums and has also published his findings. In addition, Jaryd has mentored undergraduate medical biophysics students as well as moderated a panel discussion on the experiences of historically marginalized peoples in Canada.

Shade Edwards
​​Harold M. Brathwaite Memorial Scholarship
Shade Edwards Ottawa, Juris Doctor, Year 3 Ottawa University. Shade successfully completed her second year of studies with B+ average while continuing her volunteering activity in the face of the restrictions from the pandemic. As director of the Black Law students Association at Ottawa University, she successfully organized fundraised and moderated a virtual education session for 500 participants with Keynote speakers Desmond Cole and Reakash Walters which provided a forum for stimulating discussion of the role of the justice system in anti-black racism. She continues to participate in research in various aspects of Family Law and has broadened her experiences by working as a summer law student in a Toronto law firm. Shade remains focused on pursuing a career ultimately as a judge.

Shamika Forde
BOCC Legacy Scholarship
Shamika Forde will enter the University of Toronto’s Master of Social Work program with advanced standing this Fall, with plans to graduate in 2022. She completed her undergraduate degree with Honors in Social Work at the university of the West Indies, then completed her Diploma in Education in 2019, adding licensed teacher to her credentials.  She has volunteered within her church’s Benevolent Ministries Program, most recently supporting fellow Barbadians in her community who are  experiencing negative effects of the coronavirus pandemic. She also serves as counselor and volunteer with the church’s Youth Auxiliary. Her goal is to provide social work services to vulnerable children and youth.

Tariq Inniss
​​​John Rollock Memorial Scholarship
Tariq Inniss is entering his first year of studies at St Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia as an international student in Music.  His love of music came relatively late in life: He was taking a music course as a general interest course when he found that he was drawn to the ability of music to reach out to others and to enhance communication. Tariq undertook to be tutored intensely over a very short period in order to attain a level on keyboard comparable to his classmates. Subsequently they formed a band and performed at functions. Additionally Tariq is a skilled basketball player, a long-time volunteer in Barbados Amateur Basketball Association’s annual  under-18 tournaments.

Zion Maynard
Bass Installation Scholarship
​
Zion Maynard will begin his fourth year of the University of Guelph’s Biomedical Engineering Co-op Program in the fall of 2021. Zion has been named to the Dean’s List Award four times. He has been an active contributor to his school’s Engineering community as a research volunteer in the area of stroke rehabilitation. Outside of his studies, he is as an Intercultural Engagement Student Leader and program coordinator for LINK (International Student peer helper program). Upon graduation, Zion wishes to contribute to improvement of healthcare systems and models of care worldwide through development of software and robotics initiatives. A future goal is to create a STEM foundation that will benefit young Barbadians by providing early, hands-on experiences in the sciences and technology.

Kristina Springer
Gloria Baylis Memorial Scholarship
Kristina Springer is an exemplary student who will be beginning the Masters of Audiology Program at the University of Western Ontario in September 2021.She has already earned her undergrad degree at University of Toronto as well as a Masters in Linguistics. At York, she volunteered as a note-taker for students with disabilities registered with the school's accessibilities services. Kristina also served as one of the two MA student representatives in the Graduate Program’s Executive Committee. Kristina intends to apply her preparation in Linguistics and Audiology to assist students in Barbados which currently does not have these services.

Veria Walcott
Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
Veria Walcott is entering her third year in the BSc degree at Western with a specialization in Genetics. Her interest is in DNA science and its implications. Veria has been keen on science since high school, having participated in and won science fairs. Not only was she scientifically inclined, but she also demonstrated a spirt of volunteerism by participating in book drives for island schools, in beach cleanups around the island and in collecting and packaging shoeboxes of school supplies for students in Dominica after a weather disaster. Veria is targeting a career in genetic lab research.

Barbados Canada Foundation Scholarship
Jalesa Walkes will be entering the fourth year of a Bachelor of Music Performance degree, with a specialization in voice along with a Minor in Business Administration at Tyndale University. An outstanding student, Jalesa has made the Dean’s list several times in her undergraduate studies. She currently serves as one of the undergraduate student body representatives at Tyndale and a special event coordinator. Throughout the years, Jalesa has been an active member of The People’s Cathedral Church in St. Michael Barbados where she was involved in music, Christian education, and youth ministries.

Aubrey & Marla Dan Foundation Scholarship
Brian Wood will be attending McGill University this fall in the final year of the Bachelor of Common Law and Bachelor of Civil Law programs. As a volunteer at Head and Hands Legal Clinic, Brian facilitated the development of a brochure and online resources that supported low-income individuals in Montreal with navigating the legal steps that tenants need to take to assert a claim against their landlords at the Regie du Logement (Quebec Housing Board). His volunteer focus in 2021 is in Concordia University's Legal Information Clinic supporting international students as they navigate the Canadian Immigration System. Brian aspires to be an Employment and Labour Lawyer.
