Harold Brathwaite Memorial Scholarship
Matthew Allman will be in the third year of the concurrent Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education program at Nipissing University’s prestigious Schulich School of Education. He is working towards the completion of a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science, along with a minor in French; and subsequently, to teach these three subjects in grades 7 to 12 in the Ontario public school system. Apart from academics Matthew has been described as unwavering in his dedication to community service. He has served as a volunteer tutor in Mathematics to students to help them improve their grades and there are several testimonies of the impact his virtual tutoring has made on students who have improved their grades. The Donald MacKinlay Memorial Scholarship
Kristan Bovell is entering her third year in Kinesiology at Ontario Tech University. Sensitized at an early age to the needs of those with health challenges at home and in her community, Kristan set her sights early on a career in Physical Therapy to, "help people live fuller, healthier lives. A graduate of Harrison College, Barbados, where she demonstrated very high achievement and was on the Principal's Honour Roll on multiple occasions. Kristan has also distinguished herself at Ontario Tech by making it to the President's List for both semesters of study completed so far. Kristan's references have cited her tremendous academic achievements, leadership, and dedication to excellence as well as commitment to community at home in Barbados and here in Canada.

The Bass Installation Scholarship
Jaimee Branson has had a long-standing passion for designing. She attended Queen’s College Secondary School, Barbados and received many academic honours and regional awards of merit, including recognition for her achievements in Building and Mechanical Engineering Drawing courses. She was named Best Overall Technical Student in her final year of study. In addition to maintaining a high GPA (3.9) during her graduating year, Jaimee was also an active member of Student Government and Leadership. Jaimee will enter her second year in Humber College’s Industrial Design program. In her first year (fall 2023), Jaimee attained Dean’s List standing. The Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
Joshua Patterson Coward is an aspiring educator with a goal to be an administrator and superintendent. In 2022 he led the Kiwanis Boys and Girls Club’s “Leaders in Training Program”, and has been volunteering with the Eva Rothwell Centre in Hamilton. He is described as having made an enormous contribution to the needs of youth in underserved communities in Hamilton. He was honored with the JADE Award at Queen’s for academic excellence in biological sciences. In 2022, he was awarded the Queen’s Commitment scholarship, which recognizes the academic achievements of students from minority backgrounds. The Gloria Baylis Memorial Scholarship
Gabrielle Forbes-Cultess is going into the 2nd year of her program at McMaster. She received the Marjorie Tice Bursary and was on the Dean’s Honour List in her first year. She has a GPA of 3.9 At McMaster. Kristan volunteers as a Student Accessibility Services person. As well as served as a volunteer speaker at her former high school to present a scholarship workshop to seniors in the Black Student Association. Since age 11 she has been an active volunteer with the Toronto Police Services for events such as the Annual Children's Party. By 2019, she was promoted to a Group Leader position. In this role, she was assigned to a group of volunteers, some 3-4 years older than herself, where she oversaw their duties in her station in the food area. The Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
Ethan McCalla is entering his second year of the Honours Bachelor of Environmental Studies in Geography and Aviation at the University of Waterloo. He has a notable history of volunteering with community programs focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and aviation for youth. His dedication has earned him accolades including the 2023-2024 Urban Pilots Network Aviation Excellence Award, the 2023 Black Aviation Professionals Network’s Inspire Higher Award, and the Community Impact Award for volunteerism. Additionally, he was selected as the youngest teaching assistant for the Private Pilot License (PPL) ground school, a volunteer position. Ethan is working towards being a pilot for a major airline. The BOCC Scholarship
Eden Telford is aiming to be a Child Psychologist and will begin her studies at University of Waterloo in Fall 2024. She is described as a dedicated student with a strong belief in serving others and giving back to her community. She was an active member of the Key Club at Harrison College. During her year at Brescia University College from August 2023 to April 2024, she was actively involved in the Caribbean Students Organization and volunteered her time to assist in planning events for the Caribbean students and served as the President of the Multicultural Club, where she helped host multicultural cooking competitions and other entertaining team-building activities. She was also a volunteer coach in swimming. The BOCC Scholarship is sponsored by Barbados Overseas Community Canada. |
The John Rollock Memorial Scholarship
Cherish Thompson is a 3rd year Culinary Science Management student at George Brown College. She is described as being: positive, creative, and goal driven. Cherish was very active in volunteer work while living in Barbados, devoting time to the Girl Guides and the Key Club (Kiwanis Empowering Youth). Since attending George Brown College, Cherish has earned a spot on the Dean’s list and is regarded as being a source of leadership and encouragement for her peers. After the completion of her program, Cherish hopes to continue her studies in the areas of food science, food security, and nutrition. The Gloria Baylis Memorial Scholarship
Dream Tuitt-Barnes is a third-year student at Queen's University in the Honours Health Sciences program, having entered through the esteemed QuARMs (Queen's University Accelerated Route to Medicine) pathway. This fall, she will commence her MD degree at the Queen’s University School of Medicine, with a focus on realizing her goal of becoming a plastic surgeon. She has been on the Dean’s Honours list for both of her undergraduate years and received prestigious awards such as the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Undergraduate Student Research Award. She co-founded Queen’s Cancer Kids First (QCKF) and initiated the Hear My Voice Youth Leadership Organization, both aimed at empowering young individuals facing unique challenges. The Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
Maya Weekes is in her second year at McMaster University and has indicated that her career goal is to be a psychologist. Her references highlight her use of her amazing basketball skills to give back to the community. She has served as an assistant to the head coach to help students up to grade 5 improve their technique and skills in the game. She has also served with Impact Basketball Academy and Junior NBA to offer support and provide advice and mentorship to young athletes on and off the court. She dedicated her final year in High school to helping other students and worked with a small group to reduce the feeling of alienation in the learning environment. Her advocacy has continued since joining the student body at McMaster University where due to her efforts and the release of an internal report, a Black Student Athletic Council was formed. John-Bernard Yearwood, a second-year student in York University's Bachelor of Engineering program (computer engineering specialization), has long demonstrated an interest in the physical sciences Blue Energy and environment. John-Bernard has been recognized with a Minister's Award from the Minister of the Marine and the Blue Economy, Barbados An avid diver, instructor and holder of the Advanced Open Water Certification, he has joined an interest club for avid divers that includes preserving Barbados's fragile coral reef foundations. As a member of the Young Nature Conservationist Association, John-Bernard has devoted his time and talents to activities supporting preservation of biodiversity on the island of Barbados and surrounding region.
