Scholarship Presentations Returns to In-Person Event

After a 3-year hiatus caused by COVID-19, this year’s scholarship presentations event was held at Tyndale University on October 19th. Attended by some 70 guests including several scholarship recipients and their relatives, sponsors and other invited guests, the event was an inspirational evening during which the promise of our youth was displayed. The guest speaker was Jaryd Christie, a BCF scholarship recipient and PHD candidate at Western University. View his presentation on the video below. Our 2023 BCF Scholarships Raffle draw was held on Thursday, October 19th at Tyndale University College, North York and was broadcasted on Zoom videoconference. We sold 1343 of the 1500 tickets printed, raising $19,485 after payment of the prize monies of $6,500, the lottery license fee and ticket printing expenses. We thank our board members and volunteers for their efforts in selling tickets, and all who purchased tickets for making this raffle a success.

This year we granted thirteen scholarships for a total of $52.000. Please continue to support our scholarships program by your donations and by purchasing tickets for our annual raffle lottery. We also ask that you spread the word about Barbados Canada Foundation to your contacts so that they are informed about our charitable works in aid of Barbadians in Canada and Barbados.

- 3rd Prize of $700: Ticket #0308, Haldale Jalloh of Scarborough, Ontario.

Lucy Fields Elected To BCF Board

At our 2023 Annual General Meeting held on October 19th, Lucy Fields was elected to fill the vacancy on the board created by the retirement of Penny Walcott, who served on BCF’s board for the last nine years and was the Scholarships Program Coordinator. Ms. Fields is a retired Elementary School principal with the Peel District School Board. She was born and educated in Barbados and has served in several roles in education in Barbados and Ontario. Charles (Phil) Broome and Hugh Graham Returned to BCF Board

Phil Broome, who served as BCF President and Hugh Graham, who served as Treasurer going into last Thursday’s AGM were both returned to the board. Their roles going forward will be determined at the upcoming meeting of the board of directors.
In his President’s Report delivered at the AGM Mr. Broome spoke to BCF’s achievements over the last ten years and what needs to be done to enhance the organization’s performance and fully realize its mission "To help our youth create their future and improve the lives of those in need." Slit Lamps Donated to QEH

At our Bring On The Spring event held on March 25th and attended by the Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley, we raised the funds needed to purchase 4 Slit Lamps and Tonometers costing CAD$76,813 (BBD$111,400) for donation to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department.
On September 23rd this donation was officially presented to the QEH by Earl Gill, a retired Scotiabank vice president and a member of our Fundraising Committee, on behalf of Barbados Canada Foundation. The presentation was attended by Dr. David Callender, Head of Ophthalmology, QEH, Mr. Anthony Harris, Director Medical Services QEH, Dr. Dawn Grosvenor, Ophthalmologist, QEH, Dr Kendi Griffith, Resident in Ophthalmology, QEH and Shane Sealy, Communication Specialist, QEH.
In confirming receipt of the Slit Lamps to BCF prior to the presentation, Dr. Callender said “On behalf of the staff of the eye department, the management of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and the patients who attend the clinics, I would like to sincerely thank you and your organization for your very generous donation. These slit lamps will enhance the service we provide, as we continue to endeavor to deliver the highest level of ophthalmic care to our patients.” In the picture above Dr Kendi Griffith is examining BCF representative Earl Gill to demonstrate how the Slit Lamp is used.

Bring On The Spring 2024 - April 13, 2024

Please mark your calendar for April 13, 2024. The 2024 Bring On The Spring fundraising event will be held at Pearson Convention Center and planning is already underway. This event will raise funds to purchase and donate to The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Barbados (QEH), three Transport Patient Monitors costing CAD$65,000. A transport patient monitor is a module that provides continuous integrated, multiparameter monitoring of a patient during transport, including blood pressure, pulse rate, cardiac function and temperature. This equipment is of critical importance to patient care at the QEH and we look forward to your support. Please watch this page for more information and note that you can make a donation at any time.
