What People Are Saying
n 2018 Barbados Canada Foundation (BCF) initiated a philanthropic partnership with the QEH in response to our Equipment Prospectus 11 – Selma issued as a special purpose vehicle for attracting donations for the purchase of medical and other equipment for the hospital, To date this partnership has resulted in BCF’s donation of nineteen pieces of equipment costing over $228,000 Barbados dollars, benefitting various departments and helping to enhance the quality of care provided to our patients.
This year we were delighted to receive a donation of 4 Slit Lamps and Tonometers. Following are comments made with regard to this equipment by Dr. Kendi Griffith, Ophthalmologist: “The four Topcon slit lamps donated by the Barbados Canada Foundation to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital are very sleek and user-friendly. I am particularly impressed with the illumination of the machines which allows a very detailed examination of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. Details such as anterior segment inflammation was previously a challenge to identify given the low illumination. The magnifying capabilities of the new additions have been another positive, allowing attention to be paid to fine detail. This is a significant upgrade from previously used slit lamps, giving up to 40 x magnification.
Overall, the donation has received good reviews from my colleagues who also share a similar opinion. We are grateful for these new additions to the Lions Care Eye Centre, to better serve the public and offer improved care in managing the various eye conditions seen.”
On the behalf of the QEH and all Barbadians who need to access our services I would like to thank Barbados Canada Foundation and all Barbadian Canadians and Canadian friends of Barbados who support BCF’s fundraising activities in aid of the QEH. You are making an immense difference. We value our partnership and look forward to its continuation. Thank you!

"In 2013, the SickKids Caribbean-Initiative (SCI), a partnership with the University of the West Indies (UWI), Ministries of Health, hospitals and institutions in six Caribbean countries, including Barbados, began with the goal of building sustainable local capacity to accurately diagnose, treat, and manage paediatric cancers and blood disorders. Barbados Canada Foundation answered the call for early support of the program by providing ongoing funding for the nursing training and cytometry programs in Barbados and helping to drive awareness of this important Initiative. We are most grateful to Barbados Canada Foundation for its support and funding of the SickKids-Caribbean Initiative and look forward to maintaining our valued relationship."

"Barbados Canada Foundation’s (BCF) vision is to have “A world in which each youth can realize his or her potential. A world in which the best medical care is available to everyone.” As a mother and someone who has spent my life caring for others as a nurse, I fully support this vision as well as its mission “To help our youth create their future and improve the lives of those in need.” I consider it a privilege to volunteer with BCF and to do what I can to help it achieve its vision and mission."

"As a soon-to-be physician, I endeavour to see communities healthy, with barrier-free access to the resources they need to make this possible. I aim to become a competent clinician, focused on caring for diverse populations and improving the health outcomes of our communities. I am grateful to Barbados Canada Foundation for making a space for students of Bajan heritage like myself to get the supports they need to not just survive but thrive and to continue pursuing our dreams of having a positive impact on our communities."

"Barbados Canada Foundation (BCF) seeks to create opportunities and a level playing field for those in need and I volunteer my time in support of BCF because of the causes it supports, as its experienced leadership is committed to the organization’s causes and very little of funds raised goes towards administrative costs. Also, BCF offers me a way to give back to society, knowing that my time and efforts will make a real difference in people’s lives. I strongly recommend volunteering for BCF to anyone looking to make a difference in the Barbadian community."

"I was fortunate to receive a scholarship from Barbados Canada Foundation (BCF) in 2014 and on graduating from university joined BCF’s board of directors in 2018 to give back to my community. Serving on BCF’s board has proven to immensely satisfying to me and has contributed to my personal development, sense of community and happiness. I encourage other young professionals and especially those you have benefitted from a BCF scholarship to volunteer at BCF and to serve on its board if and when the opportunity arises."
