The Blue Circle Energy Scholarship
Chiaka Alleyne. Entering her first year in civil engineering at York University is the next step in Chiaka's goal of becoming a civil engineer. She has had this goal from early childhood, partly because of the inspiration from her father’s and grandfather's roles in the construction industry. She advanced this interest through high school and by earning an associate degree in Applied Science in Building and Civil Engineering at Barbados Community College. In addition to her active participation in volleyball clubs, Chiaka has contributed to her church's various outreach programs and community projects and in the preparation of programs that teach various life skills to young children. The John Rollock Memorial Scholarship
Asha Berbeck. Asha is enrolled at Sheridan College and is studying for a Certificate in Project Management which she intends to use in planning and managing BIPOC initiatives for children and families. This is a natural progression of Asha’s undergraduate degree at Carleton, completed in 2023. Asha has been active in EDI and Mental health outreach as well as ensuring appropriate recognition of the contribution of people of colour at Carleton, while graduating with an excellent GPA. This scholarship is funded by Barbados Canada Foundation. |
The Don MacKinlay Memorial Scholarship
Kristan Bovell is entering her second year of Kinesiology studies at Ontario Technical University, with a goal of being a Physical Therapist. Her volunteer activities with the elderly while in high school have continued with her church through their outreach program for seniors, which is aimed at improving their mental health and social wellbeing. Kristan has maintained a GPA of 4.1 and has attained the President’s list at UTO. The Don MacKinlay Memorial Scholarship is funded by Barbados Canada Foundation. |
The Bass Installation Scholarship
Kennedy Charles is a first-year Civil Engineering student at York University. A talented basketball player, he attended school in the USA on basketball developmental scholarships while maintaining very good grades in his studies. His volunteer activity comprised of being a teacher’s assistant at his high school. The Bass Installation Scholarship is sponsored by Bass Installation Ltd. |
The Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
Jaryd Christie is in his final year of doctoral studies in Medical Biophysics at Western University under the sponsorship of Diproinduca Canada. Jaryd continues his lab research into the use of Artificial Intelligence to analyze medical images for improved diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer. He has presented at conferences where his work has been recognized and awarded. Jaryd mentors 3rd year university students and high school students and is actively involved in Equity Diversity and Inclusivity workshops. The Harold Brathwaite Memorial Scholarship
Joshua Coward is a first-year student at Queens University. Having maintained a 91% GTA in high school despite the distractions of gangs and other societal ills, he engaged in extracurricular sports, and with Hamilton Boys and Girls club. In addition, he was a student and educator at the Eva Bothwell Center, where he led sports participation. His goal is to become a school principal. The Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
Seth Edwards is entering the Master’s program at Western University. Seth has completed his undergraduate degree in Environment, Health and Society studies which informed his intention to pursue his Masters in Geography with the goal of being an Urban Planner and shaping land use planning and practices in Barbados. Seth is an accomplished track and field athlete and is an honor student on the Dean’s List. Apart from athletics, he facilitated a sports mentorship program for the London Boys and Girls Club and contributed to the creation of an empowerment package to combat gender-based violence at Western. The Gloria Baylis Memorial Scholarship
Dania Forde. An undergraduate student in forensics science (Chemistry) at Ontario Technical University, Dania is in her second year. She was on the Deans List in her first year. Dania volunteered with the Pine Hills creative workshop and also the Guyana orphanage. She has an associate degree in science from Barbados Community College. Gabrielle Forbes-Cultess is studying for a BA in Social Psychology at McMaster University, towards pursuing a career as a Social Psychologist. In high school, Gabrielle has excelled academically, attaining the Honor roll while developing her leadership skills which are enhanced by her entrepreneurial drive evident since the age of 9. She shared these skills with youth in the Boys and Girls club, Durham Regional Police Youth in Policing Program and IMPACT youth services among others. The Diproinduca Canada Scholarship
Ethan McCalla is entering the Aviation program at University of Waterloo with the goal of being a Commercial Pilot. Ethan shone academically in high school with a 94% average attaining the school’s Honor Roll. Ethan has dreamt of being an airline pilot from a young age, which led him to volunteer with the Dream Never Dies Foundation and Youth Taking Flight organizations. He is also an instructor in Black Boys Code, the mission of which is to improve the future of Black youth through education in computer science and technology. Cherish Thompson is pursuing a BCom in Culinary Science at George Brown College. A student of Queens College Barbados, she was an excellent Math student while volunteering with food drives, community cleanups and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards program. Cherish won recognition as the Best Female Student in Food and Nutrition at Queens College as well, which steered her to follow her passion. At George Brown she has made the Dean’s List while striving to complete her career goal of a Culinary Operations Director.

Maya Weekes is entering McMaster University’s Life Sciences program and aspires to be a Psychologist. Maya experienced certain isolating attitudes and behaviors during high school which led her to focus on creating a space where the small cohort of Black students could study, socialize and support each other. In addition, she raised awareness among the school’s 130 teachers of the Black students’ experience and what could be done to reduce their isolation. She undertook these roles while maintaining very good academics. Maya is an accomplished basketball athlete, and trains and coaches for several basketball associations.

He also studied at Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic where his academic performance led to the Minister’s award from Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy. Apart from his stellar performance in the Science Technology Engineering Math (STEM) topics, John Bernard maintains a deep interest in marine and environmental protection in Barbados through the Young Nature Conservationist Association.
